The Race to the Top: How Elevator Companies Are Competing in the Skyscraper Era

As cities grow taller, elevator companies face an unprecedented challenge: how to move people faster, safer, and more efficiently in the world’s tallest buildings. From cable-free maglev systems to record-breaking speeds, the competition among elevator manufacturers is fiercer than ever. Once limited by steel ropes, today’s elevators are breaking barriers—literally.

Cable-Free Elevators: The Maglev Revolution

Traditional elevators rely on cables, limiting them to around 500 meters. But MULTI, developed by Thyssenkrupp, uses magnetic levitation (maglev) technology—similar to high-speed trains—to move multiple cabins in a single shaft, both horizontally and vertically. This breakthrough could redefine skyscraper designs, allowing for more flexible, futuristic buildings.

Ultra-Fast Elevators: Breaking Speed Records

The Burj Khalifa’s elevators travel at 10 meters per second (36 km/h), but companies are pushing for even faster speeds. Mitsubishi Electric recently tested an elevator hitting 1,230 meters per minute (73.8 km/h)—faster than most city speed limits! These innovations reduce wait times and improve efficiency in supertall structures.

Sustainability Challenges in High-Rise Elevators

Taller buildings mean more energy consumption. Elevator companies are tackling this with:

  • Regenerative drives (recycling braking energy)

  • Lightweight materials (carbon fiber cabs reduce load)

  • AI-optimized traffic management (reducing unnecessary trips)
Green certifications like LEED are now a major selling point for developers.

The Future: Space Elevators?

While still theoretical, some companies are exploring space elevator concepts using carbon nanotubes. Though decades away, the idea highlights how elevator technology continues to push boundaries.

Elevator companies are in a high-stakes race to dominate the skyscraper era. Once a simple mechanical lift, the modern elevator is now a marvel of engineering, shaping the skyline of tomorrow.
